Enhancing Fire Detection and Response Across a Multi-Building Campus The Challenge A large, multi‑building commercial campus combining office space, data areas, plant rooms and shared facilities, faced increasing pressure to improve its fire‑risk profile and demonstrate faster, more reliable incident response. While a legacy fire alarm system was in place, it had been developed piecemeal over time and no longer aligned with the site's evolving risk landscape. Key issues included non-strategic detector placement, variable response times between zones, limited risk-based integration, operational uncertainty, and increasing regulatory and insurer expectations for evidence-linked detection strategies. The client needed a risk‑led, strategic detection solution that would reduce potential emergency response times, improve situational awareness and demonstrate robust, proactive fire‑risk management across the campus.
Our solution — Strategic Detection Solutions
Our Solution DefendX Fire Protection, part of the DefendX Onsite Group, was appointed to design and implement strategic detection solutions tailored to the site's varied risk profile, using intelligent detection, zoning and integration to shorten the time between ignition, detection, decision‑making and response. This included a risk-based fire detection review, strategic redesign of detection & zoning, intelligent system integration with access control and BMS, visualisation and decision support tools for control room teams, and data-driven performance monitoring to continuously improve response times.

Project Outcome The deployment of strategic detection solutions delivered clear, measurable improvements in risk management and emergency response performance, including reduced potential emergency response times, improved situational awareness and control, a stronger risk management narrative for stakeholders, enhanced safety and business continuity, and a platform for continuous improvement as the campus evolves.
